batik3MR

This piece of fabric was woven by a person of the H'mong hilltribe in northern Thailand. Traditionally, they would hand batik a pattern along the length of the fabric and then dye it indigo. They then pleat the fabric to make a skirt, sometimes using up to about twenty feet of fabric for one skirt. Recently, however, they have made the fabric available in its natural form, without the batik work. This and the other pieces offered at this site were purchased by the Thai who then batiked them with beautiful designs and colors.

This particular piece measures approximately 13 1/2 inches wide by 16 feet long.
