This table was made based on a photograph in The Encyclopedia of British Furniture, The Age of Walnut. The original was made around 1700 out of walnut with a marble top. This one is solid mahogany. The legs were carved from single pieces of 4" Honduras mahogany with no applied molding. The top was a 25" wide plank, 1 3/8" thick. All was finished with Liberon's oil, kind of like a Danish oil but much nicer. To keep the top from cupping I put saw kerfs to within 1/4" of the top. No glue was used except for the joints in the stretcher. All other joints slide to allow movement of the wood. Without this feature, the table would surely distort and eventually crack with changes in humidity and temperature.
