grotesque

This carving in high relief is drawn from the Italian style of stone carving in the Middle Ages. Traditionally carvings such as this were on keystones above doorways, placed there to ward off evil. It is carved from basswood, and measures approximately 5 1/2" x 9" x 3 1/2". He was carved to be placed up high, though any height above eye level would provide an appropriate perspective.
