Above is a relief carving of an American Indian done in basswood. It was done from a photo in a book. Unfortunately, I am unable to give credit for my source or the name of the person pictured, as the information has been misplaced. If someone could provide that information, I will be happy to include it. T

In the original image, there were mountains, clouds, etc. in the distance. These have been removed, and replaced with undulations which guide the eye to the subject, in addition to making the subject stand out from the background. This is my preferred method of treatment in portraiture.

The item shown is shallow relief, designed to be looked at head-on, so it would look good mounted in a deep frame. Overall dimensions are approximately 11.5"x11.75"x1.5". Finished in oil and wax, with a tooled and lightly sanded surface.
