g01battle

Battle of the Strongboxes and Moneybags is from an etching by 16th century artist Braugel, depicting a battle between the classes. The moneybags represent the middle class, while the strongboxes represent the wealthy. Very few natural humans appear, but they fill the role of representing the poor. A very complex scene, upon study reveals some instances of battle within the classes, moneybags battling other moneybags for instance. There is a lot of activity and detail, and will reveal many interesting scenes as you study the work.

The carving measures approximately 11.25" x 15" x 0.875", and is boldly carved shallow relief. Polished facets from the carving tools were left for visual interest, and no sanding has been done. The finish is oil and wax which will allow the work to develop a rich patina over time. It is carved out of basswood.
